Roma vs Porto preview
Roma were one of the stories of the Champions League last season as they caused a sensation by defeating Barcelona en route to the semi-finals of the competition, where they were ultimately edged by Liverpool, and the Italian side are of the belief that they can replicate that sensational run.
The opening goal came after Edin Dzeko knocked down Stephan El Shaarawy’s cross for Zaniolo to drill past Iker Casillas and into the far bottom corner. The teenager doubled his tally by tapping in the rebound after a Dzeko shot came off the left post.
Porto, who were undefeated in the Champions League this season, got a valuable away goal via a bit of luck when Tiquinho Soares’ effort bounced into the air and turned into an assist for Lopez, who fired into the far corner.
Roma still kept on pressing, Roma’s pressing finally paid off when Stephan El Shaarawy crossed for Zaniolo to finish off with precision after 70 minutes. And that was the second of the night for the 19-year old Seria star.
Zaniolo has emerged as one of Serie A’s most promising talents this season since his transfer from Inter Milan last summer as part of the deal which saw Radja Nainggolan move the other way.
His double powered the Serie A side to victory, on a memorable night for the Italian who no doubt caught the eye of Italian national team manager Roberto Mancini who watched on in the stands.
